Apple External Hard Drive Backup
iTunes creates a backup of your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad each time these devices are synced. This backup is called iOS backup and the files are stored on the root system drive (usually C:/).
Mac Backup Guru helps you create an exact, bootable clone of your Mac's disk onto an external hard drive. The great thing about Mac Backup Guru is that it can even take older, partial backups and sync them up with what you have now to create a clone faster than starting from scratch.

- To see the size of a specific file or folder, click it once and then press Command-I. To see storage information about your Mac, click the Apple menu in the top-left of your screen. Choose About This Mac and click the Storage tab. For Time Machine backups, it's good to use a drive that has at least twice the storage capacity of your Mac.
There is no option to change the location of iOS backups within iTunes. These backups accumulate over time with each sync and can clog your computer.
How To Backup Computer To External Drive
This quick guide will show you how to trick iTunes into changing the location of iOS backups to another drive. This will ultimately free up space on your computer's system drive.

This guide is adapted for Windows 7 users but can also be used on Windows XP and Windows 8. The guide shows how to create a symbolic link via a directory junction. You would require nothing more than administrative privileges on your PC and some basic knowledge of using command prompt.
7 Steps total
Step 1: Open the folder containing your iOS backups
To do so, click Start and type %APPDATA%Apple ComputerMobileSync Mp4 compressor software, free download.
In Windows XP this folder is found here:
C:Documents and SettingsYourUserNameApplication DataApple ComputerMobile Sync
Step 2: Drag/drop the Backup folder to a new drive
The new drive can be an external hard disk as well, provided it is always accessible (connected) on your PC while running iTunes
Step 3: Open command prompt from the original iOS backup directory
To do so, press and hold the SHIFT key, right-click and select 'Open command window here'
Step 4: Type manually (don't copy/paste) this command and hit the Enter button
Apple Computer Backup Drive Software
mklink /J “%APPDATA%Apple ComputerMobileSyncBackup” “D:Backup”
Where D is the drive letter of the new drive and 'Backup' is the name of the iTunes backup folder.
Step 5: Verify that the command prompt took and executed your command

Step 6: The symbolic link is now successfully created
You can verify this by seeing a shortcut to to the folder 'Backup' appear in the original iTunes backup directory.
Note that this is not a regular shortcut. The folder behaves as if it were actually in the original iTunes backup location. However, once you open it, a tunnel will lead you directly to the Backup folder on your new drive.
Your iTunes wouldn't know the difference but your computer certainly will by reclaiming all that needed free space on your root drive

- MaceRoss42. Jul 17, 2013 at 04:50pmThis is pretty cool. I know for certain i hate how bloated the itunes directory gets.
- Thai PepperGUIn00b Jul 26, 2013 at 06:40pmThis is great, I'm sick of apps that always want to use the C drive. Uhh, didn't they get the memo? PC's are made with SSD for the OS and a regular HDD for data. -.-
- Ghost ChiliNick42 Aug 10, 2013 at 04:28amHaven't had this as a problem (yet), but now that I've read this (and bookmarked it) I'm going back to look!
- PimientoAjay Sajjan Aug 31, 2013 at 02:24pmHi,
I have tried this but keep getting the error 'Location not available' when I double click the original backup folder.
The drive is a USB external hard drive and is connected at all times.Any ideas?? - JalapenoMattKo Apr 4, 2014 at 03:10pmAjay, I presume the error message appeared after you successfully created the junction? Pc to mac file transfer software. If so, check whether your USB hard drive letter hasn't changed since.
- PimientoRaviStava Oct 21, 2014 at 11:18pmHow would I do this in a network environment? The default location for iTunes backups on our network are 'Server_NameRedirectedFoldersUser_NameApplication DataApple ComputerMobileSyncBackup'
- JalapenoMattKo Dec 23, 2014 at 03:21pmRavi, the junction link should behave the same in your network environment. I'd advise you to give it a go and let us all know whether it went alright. It'd be worth knowing for sure. Thanks!
- ChipotleStefan X Mar 4, 2015 at 03:28pmI tried to create a junction Point in the Network and it stated that it is not supported due to 'local volumes are needed'. I hope a solution comes across. Am interested as well
- JalapenoMattKo Jun 15, 2015 at 03:34pmMicrosoft office home & student 2019 software. Stefan I think you are right. Junctions can only be set for local volumes. What Windows version are you running?
- ChipotleStefan X Jun 19, 2015 at 01:29pmin our company we run Windows 7x64 on most machines. Anyway iTui´nes and APPLE is not Company friendly in common (f.e. no collective company accounts)
